Pejorative ~ Firsthand

1. Pejorative ~ adj. Call a word or phrasepejorativeif it is used as a disapproving expression or a term of abuse. Tree-hugger is apejorativeterm for an environmentalist. Coming from the Latin word for "worse,"pejorativeis both an adjective and a noun. As an adjective, it means disapproving or disparaging. Hack is a pejorative term for a bad writer. If you call someone a politician in the pejorative sense, you mean that they are scheming and out for personal gain. Terms of abuse such as jerk and negative euphemisms such as bottom feeder are pejoratives, words you use when you want to call someone a bad name.

2. Firsthand ~ adj. Anythingfirsthandis directly experienced, so yourfirsthandknowledge of the new math teacher"s purple hair comes from the fact that you"ve seen it with your very own eyes. When you get information from someone who saw something happen or heard something said, that"s firsthand evidence. And anything you see or hear yourself is also firsthand. Your summer job might be a firsthand look at what farming is really like. Interviewing a witness to a crime gives a police officer firsthand testimony about what exactly happened.

Mastery ~ Windfall

1. Mastery ~ n. Expert skill, expert knowledge or outstanding ability. i.e. The Chinese girls have shown their mastery in table tennis at the Olympics. Complete control, total control over somebody or something.

2. Windfall ~ n. Money obtained unexpectedly, something good that is received unexpectedly, especially a sum of money. An unanticipated benefit, usually monetary in nature. Something blown down by wind, something that the wind has blown down, especially a piece of ripe fruit blown off a tree.

(a) Man’s mastery over nature in our world allows us to achieve many things, but even so we can never outmatch nature’s raw power.(b) You can only achieve mastery through a great deal of practice and determination, as there is no such thing as being born an expert.(c) All of the students in the group are showing their degree of mastery in English, every day and well on their way to fluency.
